Fleer's 1986–87 set was the first major-brand NBA release in six years — Topps had walked away from basketball in 1982, and the league itself was still crawling out of a ratings hole. Only 132 cards were printed, and pack distribution was so regional that entire states barely saw the set on shelves.
Card #57 is Michael Jordan's true rookie card. It hit the market as he averaged 37.1 PPG in his sophomore season and dropped 63 on the Celtics in a playoff game Larry Bird called "God disguised as Michael Jordan." Every centering flaw, every soft corner, every wax stain on that thin white border became the defining print quality issue of an entire era.
